How a bicycling initiative is changing the future of girls in rural India – wonderful yet unsurprising, given the bicycle’s history as an emancipation and liberation agent for women.

“Watching a lot of television shortens your lifespan. A big new study out of Australia says for each hour of TV you watch over the age of 25, it takes 22 minutes off your life, at the end of life. Put in another way, one researcher said this puts TV in the same category as smoking and obesity. It can speed up a premature death by five years, if you’re a dedicated TV...

i’m finding that appreciating the moment and not worrying about what’s ahead - what i’m doing right or wrong - is leading me to loving the very spot i’m in.

saw this dance performance last year at the salt piles in lower manhattan. entitled MELT, the site-specific piece was more striking on a visual and conceptual level than as a movement performance. something solely about the shiny, waxy skin of the dancers entirely shaped my experience of the evening.
similarly, i’ve recently become attracted to the performance work of vanessa...

look what youngjerks has been making! they’ve curated a project called fifty and fifty, which:
…attempts to construct a handsome new way of looking at our country. fifty designers, one per state, will illustrate their state motto, creating something steeped in history but completely modern and unique: a kind of designer’s atlas.
also fascinating to note the actual state...

what a great idea! clever and compelling ad campaign “become someone else” by lithuanian agency love. as they explain:
When one reads books, he/she starts living it and identifies (or not) with main hero. These print ads for the Mint Vinetu bookstore, which sells lots of classics, focuses on the idea of becoming someone else. And provokes people to try on different personas.

here’s hoping spring is on its way… and with cold weather waning, many people will be donating old sweaters and winter-wear to thrift stores. if you live somewhere where thrift stores are actually affordable (alas, not in nyc) this pet bed project featured on apartment therapy is a sweet and easy way to make something new using something old for your furry friend.

smitten with this island i saw in Dwell, and Abbey over at aesthetic outburst put it best:
This incredible island that would probably only work in a house like this. It seems so simple, just propped on saw horses until you consider the weight of that giant slab of wood.
